The Senator representing Delta North senatorial district in the Senate, Senator Ned Nwoko has strongly criticized the increasing trend of reckless defamation, unfounded accusations, and outright blackmail targeting political office holders under the guise of opposition politics.

Senator Nwoko’s remarks came in response to a recent incident involving one Mr. Chimezie, who falsely accused the senator of certificate forgery, embezzlement of public funds, and other malicious fabrications.

Hon. Gloria Okolugbo, Director of Communications in Senator Nwoko’s office, expressed deep concern over the disturbing trend, noting that despite repeated warnings, certain individuals continue to spread falsehoods and defamatory claims against the senator. She emphasized that Senator Nwoko, a renowned international legal practitioner and respected global figure, has built his reputation through decades of hard work, integrity, and dedicated service.

“It is unacceptable that anyone, hiding behind the anonymity of social media, would make baseless claims aimed at tarnishing the hard-earned reputation of the distinguished senator,” Okolugbo stated. She reiterated that such actions not only harm the individual targeted but also undermine the integrity of public discourse and democratic processes.

The rise in defamatory attacks against political figures has become a growing concern in Nigeria’s political landscape. These accusations, often propagated through social media, are frequently used as tools to discredit opponents and manipulate public opinion. In Senator Nwoko’s case, the false allegations by Mr. Chimezie highlight the need for stricter measures to curb the spread of misinformation and hold perpetrators accountable.

Senator Nwoko’s office has called for a more responsible approach to political criticism, urging individuals to base their claims on verifiable facts rather than resorting to character assassination. The senator’s team also emphasized the importance of upholding ethical standards in public discourse to foster a healthier political environment.

Senator Ned Nwoko’s condemnation of defamation and baseless accusations underscores the need for accountability and integrity in political engagements. As false claims continue to proliferate, particularly on social media, it is crucial for stakeholders to promote truth and transparency. By addressing this issue, Nigeria can work towards a more respectful and constructive political culture that benefits both leaders and citizens alike.
