New Minimum wage: Most State Labour Congress leaders are members of the ruling parties in the States. So it’s difficult for them to fight for the Welfare of their members

**Governors will claim they don’t have money to pay as fg ready to shift grounds on new minimum wage increase

It is not enough to celebrate that the Federal Government has agreed to up the minimum wage from their initial stand of N60, 000.00 per month. What’s more important is whether the States would be ready to pay whatever amount agreed upon at the end of the negotiations.

I am aware that when the minimum wage was increased to N35, 000.00 ninety per cent of the States refused to pay same amount. They claimed that they don’t have the money to pay. And no State Labour Congress went on strike.

I know that all these fights is just aimed at destabilizing the Tinubu government. But all is well.

I don’t want any one to get me wrong. The economic situation today is nothing to write home about. And I am in support of a Living Wage for our workers but the fact remains that it is only workers in the Federal payroll that would mostly enjoy this increments as the States will not do anything substantial for their own workers. Yet, the Nigerian Labour Congress and all other Associated Unions will keep quiet at the end of the day. Is it only the Federal workers and or government workers who are supposed to gain from the wage increase?

Today, our children who were supposed to write their examinations are bearing the brunt of the struggle between two elephants. Yet, they’ll gain nothing from th struggle as many of their parents work in the private sector or are farmers. They go to the same markets as the government workers whom they have suffered to make smile.

Strikes are a veritable tools to force the government to heed to the demands of the people but they should not be abused. Strikes should be used when absolutely necessary like this situation now. But they should also have human face.

I want to appeal to all the states to also implement whatever the Federal Government would be approving for workers from the negotiation table. This call is necessary because our state workers are crying but their Labour unions are not willing to stand up for them. Most State Labour Congress leaders are members of the ruling parties in the States. So it’s difficult for them to fight for the Welfare of their members.

My appeal to the Federal government is to shift ground now and actually pay our workers a Living Wage and not this peanuts they pay today.

DR. OTUARO: SETTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT

DR. OTUARO: SETTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT

By: Abai Francis

The campaign of calumny in recent times against the appointment of Chief Dr. Dennis Brutu Otuaro as the current administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, in the Niger Delta region is not unexpected, and in fact, doesn’t come as a surprise to those familiar with the play of politics in the oil region that is often associated with the “Pull Him Down” syndrome mentality often embraced by such detractors.

The development reminded me of my early days as a new graduate, when I sought employment in one of the first generation banks. To my dismay, I was bluntly told on the submission of my certificate that it is the policy of the bank not to employ an HND graduate! Just like that, without even committing me to an oral or written interview to test my proficiency, I was butted out.

One had thought that the clamour for the removal of Dr. Otuaro from office would have been centered on poor performance or the way and manner in which he runs the PAP office. Instead, the reasons given by such traducers, which could best be described as baseless, clearly reveals the shallowness in the mental makeup of those opposing the current Administrator’s stay in office.

Dr. Otuaro, a native of Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, is the first Deltan to head the Office of the PAP since it was established in 2009 by the administration of the then president Musa Yar’Adua (of blessed memory) during the era of armed agitation in the oil-rich but impoverished region.

Major General Godwin Abbe, who hails from Benin City in Edo state, and had served as a Military Governor of Akwa Ibom state as well as minister of Interior, was appointed as pioneer Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Committee, a position he held from 2009 to 2010, while Air Vice Marshal Lucky Ochuko Ararile, who later became the Ovie of Umiaghwa-Abraka Kingdom in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta state, was the first Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme inaugurated by president Yar’Adua on the 25th of June 2009.

In 2011, Timi Alaibe, a technocrat, businessman and politician from Bayelsa state, and former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was appointed as Special Adviser to The President on Niger Delta, while Hon. Kingsley Kemebradigha Kuku, a political and environmental rights activist who hails from Arogbo in Ondo state, was appointed Special Adviser to the President on the Niger Delta and Chairman, PAP, a position he held from January 2011 to 2015 during the President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan administration.

Brig Gen P.T. Boroh (Rtd) from Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa state, took over from Hon. Kuku when he was appointed in July 2015 as the Special Adviser to The President on Niger Delta Affairs and Coordinator, PAP, by President Muhammadu Buhari. His tenure would end in March 2018.

Next was Prof. Charles Quaker Dokubo, an erudite professor of international repute who hails from Abonnema in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers state. He was appointed on March 13, 2018 by President Buhari as the Special Adviser to The President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the PAP.

On removal of Dokubo, President Buhari appointed retired Col. Milland Dixon Dikio, who hails from Mbiama in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers state, as Interim Administrator of the PAP on August 26, 2020, and his appointment was renewed in 2021.

After Dikio’s interim stay at the PAP, President Buhari appointed Major General Barry Tariye Ndiomu (retd), who hails from Odoni in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa state, as the interim administrator of the PAP, on September 15, 2022. He would hold office until Dr. Otuaro’s appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 14, 2024.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Spokesman to President Tinubu, in a statement issued on Dr. Otuaro’s appointment foreshadows the knowledge of the government on the new Administrator’s wealth of experience, when the government said it “anticipates that the new Administrator will bring his REQUISITE EXPERIENCE and KNOW-HOW to this role to REVAMP the Amnesty Programme and ADVANCE the realization of its founding purpose and vision.”

The current struggle of agitation for a better Niger Delta, particularly for the oil bearing Ijaw communities in the region, has its bearing in Delta State. And since the inception of the programme, no Deltan has occupied the office of the Administrator, with Dr. Otuaro charting the path as the first Administrator to come from Delta.

The choice of Dr. Otuaro, who is not a new face in the Niger Delta struggle, to all well-meaning Niger Deltans should be applauded. The appointment of the current PAP Administrator, who has been a major stakeholder and whose contributions helped defined the struggle, is a plus and could even be described as the best thing to have happened in the history of the PAP. It is no longer news that the purpose of the PAP was derailed because of the introduction of politics on its leadership. That is the reason why issues upon issues have continued to bedevil the interventions well crafted with good intentions but poorly executed by greedy parties with self- or group-interest.

Fortunately, like a cartographer, Dr. Otuaro knows the pathways to the success of the PAP because he was in the grassroots’ struggle. And true to the expectations of the presidency, Dr. Otuaro reiterated the purpose of his appointment at a workshop, which held in Abuja in early June 2024, and is aimed at rejigging PAP employees as well as fuel their drive to align with his vision for the programme in tune with its purpose, through collaboration as a team.

To sum up this article, I leave you with the following statement made by Dr. Otuaro from that workshop: “I know all the major stakeholders in the Niger Delta and don’t need intermediaries to engage with anyone. I am not here to make money. My passion is the peace, security, and development of the Niger Delta through the mainstreaming of ex-agitators and creating opportunities for them to become self-sufficient and independent.”

I guess the above statement sums up what Niger Deltans should be expecting from the current Administrator of the PAP, the beginning of a new dawn that will rekindle the damaged hope of the people in the region. And so, Dr. Otuaro should be allowed to work and don’t need any distractions from fifth columnists!

2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Coach Finidi George unleashes Iheanacho, Lookman, Boniface on Bafana

2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Coach Finidi George unleashes Iheanacho, Lookman, Boniface on Bafana

Nigeria are determined to put their best foot forward in aiming for all three points when they go headlong against South Africa in Friday night’s 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifying series Day 3 encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

The Super Eagles know nothing but victory will assuage the feelings of football-passionate Nigerians, who are still unhappy at their sluggish start to the campaign, with two points from a possible six in their opening two games, and a rash of late arrivals to camp this time, though not entirely of the concerned players’ making.

The absence of Africa Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen due to injury, and injuries to defenders William Ekong (this year’s AFCON’s Man of the Competition), Kenneth Omeruo, Jamilu Collins and Zaidu Sanusi mean Head Coach Finidi George will scratch the bottom of the barrel for rearguard service against the AFCON bronze medallists.

George, in his competitive match in charge of Nigeria, is most likely to throw the experienced Kelechi Iheanacho and youngsters Victor Boniface and Ademola Lookman into the fore with the objective of getting the goals early enough on, on a turf that Nigeria has lost only one competitive game since it was opened 10 years ago.

Incidentally, that one competitive loss was to the Bafana (0-2 defeat at the start of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations) on 10th June 2017, but the Eagles rallied in the campaign and eventually finished ahead of the Bafana to qualify for the finals in Egypt, where they also defeated the Bafana in the quarter-finals on the way to a third-place finish.

The Bafana may also count as triumph their 2-2 with the Eagles draw at the same venue on 19th November 2014, which prevented Nigeria from qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, the Super Eagles are always one to rise above monsters of the past and do their thing, and captain Wilfred Ndidi said on Thursday that the three-time African champions will give their very best on Friday evening.

“Nobody needs to tell us that we did not start the campaign well enough. The opportunity has arisen to take our fate in our hands and rise to strong contention in our pool. We will approach Friday’s encounter with the right mental attitude.”

Lookman, who became only the sixth man in history to score a hat-trick in a European Cup final when he led Atalanta of Italy to victory in Dublin on 22nd May, is in a great form to continue where he left off after the Africa Cup of Nations, where he netted three crucial goals to steer Nigeria to a second-place finish. He also netted an important winner for the Eagles against Ghana in a friendly in Morocco three months ago, which helped Nigeria to a first triumph over Ghana in 18 years.

Boniface also had a marvelous season, winning the German League and Cup double with Bayer Leverkusen and reaching the Europa Cup final, where Lookman was the big obstacle.

Iheanacho, and midfield enforcer Wilfred Ndidi, are pumped up after helping their English club Leicester City back to the Premiership after one season in the Championship.

The Eagles will enter the pitch on Friday night recalling that South Africa has mostly been second best against them, and that their last encounter, in the semi-final of the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, ended in a penalty shootout victory for Nigeria.

NFF says South Africa created own dilemma

The Nigeria Football Federation has insisted that the South African delegation has no reason to cry foul after having to stay the night in Port Harcourt on Wednesday after arriving in Nigeria. The team only flew into Uyo on Thursday morning.

NFF’s Protocol chief, Emmanuel Ayanbunmi said the South African Football Association informed the NFF that its chartered aircraft would depart South Africa on Wednesday morning by 8am and land in Lagos to undergo immigration formalities.

Bafana Bafana and Super Eagles on Bumpy Walk to Uyo World Cup Duel on Friday June 7

Bafana Bafana and Super Eagles on Bumpy Walk to Uyo World Cup Duel on Friday June 7

Visiting Bayana Bayana of South Africa and the Super Eagles of Nigeria are having a bumpy walk to their Day 3 world cup qualifier scheduled for Friday at the Nest of Champions stadium, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria.

The South Africans had epileptic flights from their base and their flight was diverted to Port Harcourt because of delays. They arrived Port Harcourt late and cold not connect their flight to Uyo because the Uyo Airport had closed for the day so the entire team slept Port Harcourt yesterday.

The team will however train at the 30,000 capacity stadium constructed by Julius Berger at $96m for the present Senate President, Gods’will Akpabio when he was Governor of Akwa Ibom State which was named after him when the stadium was opened on 7th November 2014.

South Africa’s coach, Belgians Hugo Broos is confident that Bayana Bayana (The Boys) would win despite their Dean of Defence, Grant Kekena being down with Hamstring injury.

Newly employed Finidi George fondly called Finito by soccer lovers in Nigeria battled with having his players in camp due to nationwide strike by Nigeria’s Labor Forces; had his first assistant, Daniel Amokachi resign and some key players missing.

Nigeria’s goal talisman, Victor Osimhen is out due to injury; stand in captain William Troost-Ekong who was not invited is on protest that he is fit to finish South Africa; his Captain Ahmed Musa was not invited ditto defence ace Kenneth Omeruo and new boy on the show, Nathan Tella excused himself for family reasons.

Nigeria’s terror squad was upgraded to include Fisayo Dele-Basiru of Hatayspors; Benjamin Tanimu from Tanzania; Rizespor Midfield dynamo Ibrahim Olawoyin with NPLF players Kenneth Igboke and Sadiq Ismael.

Finito will unleash Europa Cup Winner, Lookman Ademola who has scored four goals for the Eagles; Bayern Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface; Samuel Chukwueze; Kelechi Ihenacho, Alex Iwobi and Goalkeeper Nwabali who made South Africa weep at last AFCON saving two penalty kicks.

The Match in Uyo will kick off at 8pm Nigerian Time under the whistle of Chadian Ref , Alhadi Allaou Mahamat (38) who also officiated at the AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast . He will be assisted by Sudanese Mohammed Ibrahim Abdallah and Sao Tome’s Abelmiro Dos Reis Monte Negro. Ticket for the Regular stand is N1k and the VIP stand at 3K.

The rivalry between both countries is growing by the day since Nigeria bashed them in their first meeting 4-0 in 1992 at the world cup qualifier. Apart from that, I have records of 12 games played Nigeria winning 6 games, South Africa 1 game and 5 draws. Of this Nigeria won twice in world cup qualifiers; in the 7 AFCON matches played Nigeria won 2, South Africa 1 and there were 4 draws. Nigeria won the only Nations cup match between them.

Nigeria equaled the 1992 win 4-0 on 31st January 2004 in AFCON duel; South Africa’s biggest win against Nigeria was the 2-0 drubbing at Friday’s venue on 11th June 2017 also in an AFCON match. Tocelo Rantie scored 54th minute and Percy That made it 2-0 in the 81st minute.

Take a look at their last six meetings. On 20th November 2014 they played 2-2 in AFCON match in South Africa; they also played 1-1 in South Africa on 29th March 2015 in a friendly encounter in South Africa; then came the shock treatment at Uyo where South Africa ran away with 2-0 victory before the 1-1 draw in South Africa on 17th November 2018.Nigeria won at home 2-1 in an AFCON match on 11th July 2019 before the memorable AFCON semifinals in Ivory Coast that ended 1-1 and Nwabili stopped two penalty shots for Nigeria to advance to the finals. Nwabili plays in South African league.

Nigeria ranked 30 in the world is expected to win the Friday match. The team appeared at the world cup 6 times and was always stopped in the round of 16 in 1994, 1998 and 2014. Appeared 20 times at AFCON and were champions in 1980, 1994 and 2013. Appeared at the Nations Cup 3 times and were Runners-up 2018.

South Africa ranked 59 in the world had 3 world cup appearances being stopped each time at the group stages in 1998, 2002 and 2010. Appeared 11 times at AFCON and won it only at the first time out in 1996 when Nelson Mandela was President. They had 2 appearances at Nation’s cup despite their high league organization and made quarterfinal in 2011.

Nigeria has just 2 points in the group with 1-1 against Lesotho and Zimbabwe to place 3rd after Rwanda with 4 point in 1st position and South Africa with 3 points at 2nd position having beaten Benin Republic 2-1 and lost 0-2 to Rwanda.

Nigeria will meet Republic of Benin on Tuesday while South Africa will play neighbors Zimbabwe at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfonteiro same day.

Warri Brand Committee to stop indiscriminate dumping of waste in Warri

*Will soon embark on clean up of Igbudu Market, Warri open up internal roads within the market

Members of Warri Brand Committee, have begun moves to stop indiscriminate dumping of waste along major roads and streets in Warri as well as pedestrian lanes within communities in Warri South Local Government Area.

Chairman of Warri Brand Committee, Dr. Onojeghwo Okeoghene Mavis, who made the disclosure today, Tuesday August 6, after a meeting held by members of the committee at Warri South Council Main Secretariat in Warri, said plans were in top gear to embark on extensive enlightenment campaigns.

Dr. Onojeghwo, noted that members of the committee, were particularly miffed with the manner in which owners of commercial and private vehicles throw refuse along major roads and streets in Warri while on transit, saying the Comrade Weyinmi Isaac Agbateyiniro administration ‘s resolve to brand Warri for increased local and foreign investments, begins with environmentally friendly city.

Whilst noting that members of the committee have been detailed to commence the enlightenment campaigns in public and private schools, faith based organisations as well as direct engagements with community and opinion leaders, Dr. Onojeghwo warned that residents of Warri who dump refuse indiscriminately henceforth, will face the full weight of the law.

He explained that the committee will work with the Warri South Council Environment Department to action the mandate, revealing that strategic conversation was ongoing to clean up Igbudu Market Warri and open up internal roads within the market, as part of the Warri Brand project.

Reported by Bishop Samson Amajene

Topic: Business Partnership

In his message on business partnership, Bishop Samson Amajene highlighted the importance of being cautious when engaging with unbelievers in business. Referring to Psalm 1:1 in the King James Version, he emphasized that it is vital for individuals to avoid seeking counsel or forming alliances with those who do not share their faith.

According to Bishop Amajene, partnering with non-believers carries inherent risks due to their deceitful tendencies, which have led many Christians to unfortunate experiences in business dealings. He cautioned that individuals of such nature are prone to exploitation, often resulting in unfavorable outcomes. He stressed the need for divine intervention to protect against detrimental friendships, as outlined in Scriptures warning against mingling with unbelievers.

Furthermore, the Bishop pointed out that non-believers may lack integrity in honoring agreements, attributing their actions to a hardened conscience that may even lead to harmful consequences. He advised that when considering a business partnership, one must evaluate the spiritual alignment of potential collaborators to ensure God’s favor and blessings on the venture.

In conclusion, Bishop Amajene underscored the significance of inviting God’s presence into business endeavors, noting that partnering with like-minded believers enhances the likelihood of receiving divine blessings. He encouraged readers to prioritize prayer and faith-based practices in their business interactions to mitigate risks and secure success.

Thank you for your attention.

Group Accuses ICE Zonal Head for allegedly Stealing Government Property

Group Accuses ICE Zonal Head for allegedly Stealing Government Property

By: Odeya Ogbetuo

The Delta Concerned Stakeholders have alleged that the Zonal Head and others of the Institute of Continuing Education, ICE, Warri Centre have used their position to remove government property during the movement of the school from its Okere Road premises to Cavegina Primary School, Warri which they could not account for.

The Group in a statement made available to newsmen in Warri disclosed that during the movement, these items: a 100 KVA diesel generator, 2 Units of 60 KVA diesel generators, Sumel pump for pumping water, satellite RX/RT 7.2 prodelin dish antenna for communication purpose, 2 units of water tanks and their stands, computer accessories, computer tables and roofing sheets were allegedly stolen which they could not account for when the Zonal Head and her cohorts were summoned to Asaba by the Director of ICE.

The Delta Concerned stakeholders noted that in 2015, the ICE Warri premises were handed over to the Baptist Mission by the outgoing governor of Delta State which was challenged at the court but though, they lost but, the matter has not been foreclosed, adding that the stealing of the above items during the movement must be accounted for.

The Group stated that they are aware of a petition written against the unauthorized removal and disposal for the ICE properties in Warri Zonal Office which prompted the Director and Chairman of the Governing Board of ICE to constitute investigative team which visited Warri and their facts finding confirmed those items were stolen and subsequently invited the suspects and witnesses to Asaba to throw more light on the allegations.

The Group stated that the information reaching the stakeholders revealed that the Zonal Head of the ICE Warri is piling up unbearable pressure on the management of ICE such that the Director and Chairman of the Governing Council are buckling on the weight of the pressure and are now prepared to sweep the glaring case of stealing of public property under the care and protection of the Zonal Head of the ICE Warri under the carpet.

According to the Group “The law is that where a misconduct or improper behaviour of an employee also amounts to a crime, the employer cannot treat the issue as one of internal discipline for the staff involved. The employer must turn over the suspected employee to the police for full investigation of the alleged crime and possible prosecution in the court of competent jurisdiction where the suspected employee may be convicted or discharged and acquitted.”

The Group re-emphasized that “It should be made known to the Management of ICE that they have no power to discipline the Zonal Head of ICE Warri and her cohorts who are suspected of committing the crime of stealing without first reporting the matter to the police who will fully investigate and possibly prosecute them” they added.

The Group called on appropriate government officials, especially the Commissioner for Basic Education, Delta State Commissioner of Police, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice and the Secretary to the Delta State Government to call on the Director of ICE and the Chairman of the Governing Council to respect due process and rule of law and that public officials who are alleged to steal or misappropriate public property are not treated with kid gloves, ICE Warri public property which must be protected.

This reporter on fact finding visited ICE premises at Cavegina Primary School, Warri and spoke with the Zonal Head of ICE Warri, Mrs. Cynthia Kena Odeimor who said she was under authority and she has to seek clarification. She pulled a call across to the Director of ICE in Asaba who said as a civil servant she has no power to speak on behalf of ICE.

More talents to be  unearthed at Anambra 2nd  Sports Solution Initiative, ANSSI

More talents to be  unearthed at Anambra 2nd  Sports Solution Initiative, ANSSI

Anambr State Director of Sports, Faith Okwonna revealed that more talents will be unearthed at the 2nd Anambra Sports Solution Initiative (ANSSI).

Okwonna disclosed this during the volleyball event at the Ekwueme Square in Awka on Tuesday.

She expressed optimism that talents discovered in this year’s edition will win more laurels for the state at the 2024 National Youth Games in Delta state.

She said, “I want to thank the Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, for investing in grassroots sports development. When His Excellency attended the first edition, he was impressed and directed that the ANSSI is going to be a yearly affair.

“We need the continuous support of Governor Soludo because most of the talents discovered last year made the state proud at the 2023 National Youth Games; that is why we are optimistic that talents identified this year will win medals for the state at the forthcoming National Youth Games in Delta State this September.

Okwonna applauded the participating schools from the various Local Government Areas for keying into the initiative of the Sports Commission in giving primary and secondary school students the opportunity to expose their talents.

She said, “This year, we have a lot of schools because of the level of awareness. The Anambra State Sports Commission partnered with the Ministry of Education in sensitising the various schools; the turnout is massive.

“I have been interacting with the various schools in Anambra state and informing them of the essence of sports in the life of the students. Some of them do not know that sports go with education; there are some students who are talented and denying them the opportunity to participate is equivalent to killing their talents.

“Despite the massive publicity within the state, few schools decided not to be a part of the ANSSI due to reasons known to them. It is a big problem faced by the school sports department but we are looking into it and I want to assure you that the third edition will be massive”.
