Security agencies were also involved and strategically positioned to ensure peace and order before, during and beyond the voting process.

Elevating Nigerian Sports: The Case for Separating Elite and Amateur Management

Elevating Nigerian Sports: The Case for Separating Elite and Amateur Management

Introduction

In Nigeria, sports serve as a beacon of unity, pride, and potential. However, the conflation of elite and amateur sports management has presented unique challenges that stymie the development of both levels. Drawing a clear distinction between the management of elite and amateur sports could revolutionise the landscape, enhancing professionalism, improving funding allocation, and ultimately elevating the entire sports ecosystem in Nigeria.

Understanding the Current Landscape

Nigeria’s sports management system often bundles elite and amateur sports under a single administrative umbrella. This one-size-fits-all approach can lead to inefficiencies, where the distinct needs of elite athletes and amateur participants are not adequately addressed. Elite athletes require high-performance resources, specialised coaching, and international exposure, while amateur sports need accessibility, community involvement, and developmental programs.

The Case for Separation

1. Specialised Management: Elite sports operate in a high-stakes international arena where the margin for error is minimal. These athletes need managers who specialise in high-performance sports and understand the nuances of professional leagues, international competitions, and athlete marketing. Conversely, amateur sports benefit from management focusing on mass participation, grassroots development, and community engagement.

2. Tailored Funding Strategies: The financial demands of elite and amateur sports differ significantly. Elite sports require substantial investment in technology, facilities, and global talent scouting, which can yield returns through sponsorships, endorsements, and prize money. Amateur sports, more community-oriented, need funding that supports broad participation and inclusivity, often relying on government grants and local sponsorships. Separating these entities allows for more strategic and effective use of funds.

3. Professionalism in Sports: Elite sports demand professionalism, including rigorous training schedules, scientific support, and strategic career management. Separating from amateur sports allows elite sports management to adopt a more corporate structure, focusing on performance, brand partnerships, and media relations.

4. Developmental Focus for Amateurs: Amateur sports are crucial for nurturing future talent and fostering a sports culture among the general populace. Independent management would ensure that these programs prioritise long-term athlete development, physical education, and local sports promotion without the pressure of immediate international success.

Global Examples of Successful Separation

Countries like the United Kingdom and Australia have distinct pathways for elite and community sports. For instance, UK Sport focuses on Olympic and Paralympic sports, driving elite performance, while Sport England targets community and grassroots sports to increase general participation. This separation allows each entity to operate with clarity and focus, tailored to their specific goals and metrics for success.

Implementing the Change in Nigeria

To implement this separation effectively in Nigeria, a phased approach can be recommended:
• Phase 1: Establish clear governance structures and define the roles and objectives for two bodies governing elite and amateur sports.

• Phase 2: Develop specific funding models for each body, ensuring transparency and accountability in allocating and using funds.

• Phase 3: Implement targeted programs for both sectors, with regular assessments to ensure they meet their goals.

Conclusion

Separating the management of elite and amateur sports in Nigeria is not merely an administrative change; it’s a transformative strategy that could unlock the full potential of Nigerian sports. By allowing specialised management to cater to elite and amateur athletes’ unique needs, Nigeria can foster a healthier sports culture, achieve international acclaim, and build a sustainable sporting future. This approach ensures that while our champions soar globally, our communities thrive on the home front.

Sports Minister Tasks Nigerian Referees to Deepen Capacity for Greater Participation in FIFA/CAF Flagged Competitions

Sports Minister Tasks Nigerian Referees to Deepen Capacity for Greater Participation in FIFA/CAF Flagged Competitions

Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh on Wednesday tasked Nigerian referees to deepen and strengthen their professionalism in order to attract greater participation in FIFA and CAF flagged competitions. Speaking during his interactive session with the 2024 FIFA Member Association Refereeing Development Course, the minister regretted that Nigerian referees are not playing critical roles in both FIFA and CAF flagged competitions as a result of failure to reach the performance and professional threshold set out by both international bodies.

Describing the situation whereby Nigerian referees are neglected and relegated to the background in the perking order by FIFA and CAF as unacceptable, he said that the current administration would do everything within its powers to reverse this ugly trend. The Minister stated that his engagement with the referees was part of ongoing efforts by him to get to the root of the problem and proffer solutions to solve the problem.

He recalled that at inception as minister, one of the early engagements that he initiated was to invite referees and critical stakeholders in sports for a parley when his attention was drawn to the fact that no Nigerian referee was considered qualified enough to officiate in the just concluded CAF flagged African Cup of Nations.
He said, “I thought that this was unacceptable. It was for this reason that I started series of engagements with Referee Associations, the NFF and other critical stakeholders. Sadly, even in the next AFCON, no Nigerian referee was listed to participate in officiating duties by CAF. This is a shame. As a country, it is important that we get right things that we are not doing right to change this ugly narrative.”

He challenged the elite referees to raise the bar in terms of their commitment to improving their professionalism adding that government is ready to support and work closely with them to put an end to this neglect.

Responding to the Minister, the lead FIFA Technical Instructor, Mr. Felix Tangwarinma thanked the Minister for his commitment to the development of Nigerian referees. He observed that not too long ago, Nigerian referees were doing very well as officials in international competitions but regretted that lack of continuity left a huge gap when they retired. The FIFA Technical Instructor stated that that training was part of ongoing efforts to close the gap.

He explained that one of the major problems that impacted the relegation of Nigerian referees in FIFA and CAF organized competitions is the fact that presently, there is no Nigerian referee is certified to officiate with VAR. He said that as a country, Nigeria needs to train the referees with VAR to enable them cover the required number of hours stipulated by FIFA and CAF to enable them to be picked to officiate in championships.

The FIFA instructor informed the Minister that the VAR equipment was very expensive to procure. Given the huge financial exposure, he called on the sports ministry to assist with funding since NFF may not be able to fund the procurement of the required number of VAR to be deployed for use in the national league. In the interim he suggested that Nigeria can bridge the gap by sending referees for VAR training in countries like Morrocco and Tunisia while it puts its house in order.

Best Talent & Shino Kontinental Scouting programme: Former MFM Coach, Olalekan making wave in Benin Republic League

**Played 10 matches, won 7,drew 2, lost one. Voted Best Coach

By: Sunday Agunbiade Mr VAR

It’s been a concomitant of critical stakeholders at the University of Ibadan Sports Complex ,venue of mega Scouting programme organized by Best Talent FC in conjunction with Shino Sport and Kontinental Management.

Ex Internationals like Beto, Yusuf Ayila, Gabriel Olalekan and the likes were in attendance to sed things for these and thumbed up the organizers and FIFA agents who came from Europe for their unbiased selection of talented players.

Addressing journalists in Ibadan, the former MFM handler ,Coach Gabriel Olalekan lsuded the organizers of the Mega Scouting programme for the job well done and he called for more genuine scouts to take a cue from Best Talent with Shino Scouting Programme in Ibadan.

“So far so good, I’m impressed with what I have seen here. Big kudos to the organizers. My purpose of being here is to look for talented players and probably take them to my team in Benin Republic,Jack FC playing in Benin Republic league.”

“In terms of logistics and infrastructure, Benin Republic league appears better. They have facilities as every team has their own pitch. No team is borrowing pitch to train. Nigeria has better social media connect with media guys that promote the league . Then, Nigeria is blessed with talented players than Benin Republic but the organization is superb. Players are not complaining of payment of salary being owed there. This is the bedrock of league success.”

“I was on a rescue mission/probation in Benin Republic and I was able to salvage the situation for the club Jack FC. Surprisingly, I came top of the log and qualified the team for play off.Out of 10 league matches played, I won.7,drew 2 and lost 1 game. This makes me a toast of other clubs in the country as I was voted Best Coach in the league “. Says a proponent grassroots coach.

“Now, I am to look for more players and build a team that will be difficult for any team to beat just like how we raised the MFM with grassroots players and the vision will become a reality”.

On his possibility of returning to Nigeria league, Coach Gabriel said: “I don’t mind coming back to Nigeria if a serious club beckons and I will consider other options before making my decision on such voyage.
