Gbenekama mourns passage of Pa. Clark, describes his demise as a huge vacuum to Niger Delta, Nigeria

By: Celestine Ukah

A Pan Niger Delta leader and (Fiyewei) Spokesman of the great Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area, Delta State, High Chief GodsPower Gbenekama JP mourns the passage of Elder Statesman and a father in Niger Delta, Pa. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark.

Chief Dr. Gbenekama, in his condolence to the family of the Elder Statesman and former Information Minister, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, described the demise of Pa. Clark as a huge loss and vacuum to the people of the Niger Delta region, Nigeria, and Africa, saying his fatherly role and leadership contributions to the country will be greatly missed.

The Gbaramatu Kingdom Spokesman said the passing of the foremost nationalist, educationist, legal practitioner, freedom fighter, and restructuring advocate marks the end of an unforgettable era.

According to Chief Gbenekama, “The departure of Pa. Clark at 97 marks a watershed moment in Nigerian history. As a man who lived through the struggles and triumphs of the colonial, pre-independence, and post-independence eras, Chief Edwin Clark was a true embodiment of Nigerian history.

“Chief Clark’s involvement in the pre-independence period, when he was elected Councillor for Bomadi in 1953, and his tenure with the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), along with his intellectual contributions as a member of the West African Students’ Union while studying at Holborn College, London, set him apart as a patriot of the highest order.

“From his remarkable contributions in the 1960s, when he served as a member of an advisory committee to the Military Governor of the Mid-Western Region, David Ejoor, and later as a cabinet member in the administration of Military Governor Samuel Ogbemudia, to his appointment as Federal Commissioner of Information in 1975 by then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Chief Clark demonstrated unwavering dedication to the Nigerian cause.”

Chief God’sPower Gbenekama said the late Ijaw leader’s instrumental role in the establishment of educational institutions significantly impacted society, adding that Chief Clark played a key role in the establishment of the Mid-West College of Technology, which later became the University of Benin. The former senator and founder of Edwin Clark University had an unrelenting passion for education.

“Pa. Clark played a unifying role during the MEND era and actually contributed to stem the Avengers days where all the pipeline of the Niger Delta were almost destroyed.

“His contribution in the emergence of the Regional Oganisation, Pan Niger Delta Forum, (PANDEF) assisted in bringing down the menace of pipeline vandalism in the days of Avengers. Pa. Clark truly was an active participant with others who became errand boys to papa in dousing the tension in the Niger Delta and beyond, we would miss him greatly”. Chief Gbenekama stated.

The Untapped Goldmine: Why Nigeria’s Women’s Football League Deserves More Recognition and Investment

The Untapped Goldmine: Why Nigeria’s Women’s Football League Deserves More Recognition and Investment

By Tolulope Oguntimehin

This morning, while scrolling through social media, I stumbled upon a short clip of Shukurat Oladapo, who recently signed for AS Roma Ladies, during her first training session with the team. Her excitement and determination to secure a spot in their league matches were palpable. Yet, what struck me most was the stark contrast between her new journey and the lack of recognition Nigeria’s Women’s Football League receives back home. Despite producing world-class talents like Oladapo, the league continues to operate in the shadows, overshadowed by other leagues in Europe

Shukurat Oladapo is just one of many Nigerian female players who have left the shores of Nigeria to join top European and American clubs. Unlike their male counterparts, who often start in academy or youth teams, these women walk straight into the main teams of their new clubs. This speaks volumes about the quality and readiness of players from Nigeria’s Women’s Football League. Yet, despite this undeniable talent, the league remains underfunded, underpromoted, and undervalued.

At one point, Nigerians expressed concerns about the drop in performance of female players who moved abroad, arguing that they performed better for the national team when they stayed in Nigeria. Our female players excel both at home and abroad, proving that the issue isn’t talent but rather the lack of exposure, branding, and merchandising opportunities in Nigeria. Why is it so difficult to replicate the level of support and recognition that European leagues provide? If there’s one area where Nigeria is close to matching Europe, it’s women’s football. So, why aren’t we taking it seriously?

During a press conference, the chairperson of the Women’s Football League was asked about sponsorship for the league. Her response? “we want to focus more on partnership than sponsorship.” Unfortunately, these partnerships have been few and far between. Who should be partnering with the women’s league? Who are the stakeholders that can drive this change? In Europe and America, women’s football thrives because of strong corporate partnerships, government investment, and a focus on branding and merchandising. Nigeria must adopt a similar approach.

The league must prioritize building robust structures that make investment not only possible but attractive, drawing lessons from the frameworks already established for men’s football. By doing so, it can create a sustainable ecosystem for women’s football to thrive. One key step is encouraging established clubs like Sporting Lagos, Ikorodu City, and Inter Lagos to expand their portfolios by owning and managing female teams just as the management of Remo stars is doing with their female team. This move would not only bridge the gap between European clubs and Nigerian women football clubs but also bring much-needed resources, expertise, and visibility to the women’s game.

Branding, merchandising, and publicity are critical areas that require immediate attention. The league must work tirelessly to create a compelling narrative around women’s football, one that resonates with fans and sponsors alike. From designing eye-catching merchandise to launching targeted marketing campaigns, every effort should be made to attract fans to the stadiums. Imagine the impact of seeing female football stars on billboards, social media, and TV ads, or the excitement of fans wearing jerseys with the names of their favorite female players. These are not just dreams—they are achievable goals that can transform the league into a vibrant, fan-driven spectacle.

The federal government must commit to developing women’s football as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda to empower the youth. The Women’s Football League must also take proactive steps by encouraging private individuals and groups to own women’s clubs, as seen in the United States and other parts of the world.

Recently, players like Josephine Mathias and Rivers Angels’ goalkeeper Fatima Oloko captured the attention of Nigerians, but these moments of media buzz were not maximized. The league must learn to capitalize on such opportunities to build a sustainable fan base and attract sponsors. Women’s football is a goldmine waiting to be tapped, but it requires a strategic, intentional approach.

The National Sports Commission must push the federal government to allocate special funds for the development of women’s football. The league must also rethink its strategies, focusing on better packaging, promotion, and partnerships. Our women’s football isn’t lacking in quality—it’s lacking in the right structures and support systems.

It’s time for Nigeria to give its Women’s Football League the attention it deserves. With the right investment, branding, and government backing, the league can become a powerhouse, not just in Africa but on the global stage. The talent is there; now, it’s up to us to unlock its full potential.

Lagos Assembly Crisis:”Enhanced Security Measures for LSHA.” RE: Publication Of Letter To DSS

Lagos Assembly Crisis:”Enhanced Security Measures for LSHA.”
RE: Publication Of Letter To DSS

Our attention has been drawn to a publication by the Department of State Security (DSS) regarding a letter dated 14th February 2025, titled *”Enhanced Security Measures for LSHA.”*

Earlier today, lawmakers and staff of the Lagos State House of Assembly arrived at the Assembly complex to find the offices of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, and the Acting Clerk of the House locked and access restricted by operatives of the DSS. Furthermore, the legislative chamber itself was sealed off.

In an apparent effort to justify their actions, the DSS released to the public a letter written by the Acting Clerk of the House, requesting security presence at the Assembly complex.

We wish to categorically state that this is not the first time the House has sought security support from the DSS.

However, it is important to emphasize that in all previous instances, DSS operatives have been stationed at the main gate of the Assembly complex, ensuring that unauthorized persons do not gain entry.

For the avoidance of doubt, at no point did the letter requesting security assistance instruct the DSS to:
– Invade the legislative chamber
– Lock and restrict access to the Speaker’s office
– Lock the office of the Acting Clerk
– Lock the Deputy Speaker’s office

The events of today raise serious concerns about undue interference in legislative affairs. The sanctity of the Lagos State House of Assembly was undermined by armed DSS operatives who actively obstructed lawmakers from performing their constitutional duties.

This act amounts to an infringement on the independence of the legislature and a direct assault on democratic governance.

We reiterate that the lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly have taken a decisive and lawful step in the removal of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa. We stand firmly behind the leadership of the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, and remain resolute in our commitment to enacting laws that foster the development and progress of Lagos State.
We call on all relevant authorities to investigate this unwarranted restriction on legislative activities and ensure that such incidents do not recur.

E-signed
Hon. (Otunba) Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode

Bloodshed in Osun: Gov. Adeleke directs security agencies to take full control of all local government secretariats

Bloodshed in Osun: Gov. Adeleke directs security agencies to take full control of all local government secretariats

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has issued a directive urging all residents, including politicians, to stay away from local government secretariats to prevent further bloodshed and protect public assets.

This, he said, is in response to the violent clashes triggered by an alleged illegal takeover attempt by sacked APC chairmen and councillors.

Adeleke disclosed this in a message he posted on his official X account on Monday evening.

“Following reports of a failed illegal takeover bid of local government councils in Osun by the sacked APC Chairmen and councillors, I hereby direct all Osun residents, including politicians across all political divides, to stay away from the local government secretariats to protect public properties and avoid further bloodshed,” the governor stated.

The directive comes as tensions remain high, with workers under the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees withdrawing their services across the state, effectively leaving the council secretariats under lock and key.

“This has become necessary, especially as the council secretariats are expected to be under lock and key due to the withdrawal of service announced by workers of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) across the state,” he added.

Expressing grief over the casualties resulting from the crisis, the governor extended his condolences to the families of those affected.

“I equally condole families of victims of the APC illegal takeover bid and chaos unleashed across the state by the APC and their hired thugs.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost five members, with several others wounded. Two of those members are from Iragbiji, Boripe local government.

“Another two were killed at Ola Oluwa Local Government. Another one was lost at Ikire. We must stop further bloodshed,” his statement further noted.

According to Punch, the governor, in his bid to restore order and ensure safety, the governor directed security agencies to take full control of all local government secretariats.

“I have directed security agencies to take charge of all local government secretariats, and I hereby assure residents of Osun of their safety and protection of lives and properties,” he affirmed

Isoko youths blow hot, condemn illegal arrest of comedian over abandoned electricity project

Isoko youths blow hot, condemn illegal arrest of comedian over abandoned electricity project

**Warn of dire consequences.if Otagba isn’t released immediately

The Isoko National Youth Assembly (INYA), has condemned in strong terms the illegal arrest of Comedian Ajirioghene Otagba popularly known as MC 2Kingdom by a contractor, Chief Matthew Edevbie.

Edevbie, who is the contractor handling the abandoned 132 KVA Substation Electricity Project at Ozoro in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State reportedly arrested Otagba for criticising the abandonment of the project.

The Isoko Youths in a statement by INYA President, Comrade Eniwake Orogun, on Saturday, warned that if Mr Otagba was not released immediately and unconditionally there would be dire consequences.

While calling on Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene on the illegal arrest, the youths appealed to a former Governorship aspirant and brother to the contractor, Olorogun David Edevbie to prevail on his brother to release Mr Otagba unconditionally.

The statement reads: On the Arrest of Ajirioghene Otagba!

“We have received the news of the arrest of an Isoko son by Chief Matthew Edevbie, the elder brother to a former Delta State Governorship aspirant, David Edevbie in respect to a video he made, calling for the completion of the 132 kva substation electricity project awarded to Chief Matthew by NDDC with the aim of improving power supply in Isoko 14 years ago.

“We have watched the video severally and found no reason whatsoever for the arrest, rather he should be commended by Edevbie and all meaningful individuals as it conforms to the federal government whistle blowing policy.

“In the said video, the public and concerned stakeholders were notified of the vandalism going on at the project site. Edevbie was also called out to return to site and complete the project.

“Rather than order a police arrest, he should have come out to explain any challenge or impediment to this project. The project is important to us and we want it completed.

“Equally worrisome is the fact that the alleged ‘offence’ was committed in Ozoro, Delta state where the project site is situated but Chief Edevbie arrested this noble Isoko son in Lagos State in preparation for onward transfer to Abuja. This is purely is a case of intimidation.

“Let it be known to Chief Edevbie and his company that we shall not stand idly and watch one of us being blatantly intimidated and attempt to silence the call for the completion of the project.

“As a responsible organisation, we are patiently waiting for the constitutionally allowed time for which Mr. Ajirioghene Otagba can be held in police custody before he can be charged to court, failure upon which shall be met with strong resistance as never seen before in the state, otherwise, he should be released unconditionally.

“We are familiar with antics of the rich against the perceived weak and so will be unsurprised if the petition against Mr. Otagba will include mundane issues of threat to life, tarnishing of image and other concoctions. We are waiting.

“We call on Olorogun David Edevbie to do the needful to protect his family name from being dragged to the mud. He must act timely and wisely immediately.

“We call on the state governor to intervene immediately to avoid anarchy and chaos as there is already palpable tension and brewing unrest across Isoko which we shall not shy away from taking the lead should that become necessary.”

A Weekend of Thrills, Drama, Sackings, and Unyielding Passion in the NPFL

A Weekend of Thrills, Drama, Sackings, and Unyielding Passion in the NPFL

By Tolu Oguntimehin

What an electrifying weekend of football across the nation! Week 24 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) served up a spectacle of grit, determination, and sheer drama, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. From stunning home victories to hard-fought draws, the league is heating up as clubs scramble for every precious point. In Nigerian parlance, “jungle don dey mature!”—the battle is intensifying, and the stakes have never been higher.

At the top of the table, the title race is taking on a life of its own. While Remo Stars have been tipped as runaway champions, Shooting Stars (3SC) have thrown a spanner in the works, adding a fresh twist to the chase. Gbenga Ogunbote, the seasoned tactician, is determined to finally lay his hands on the elusive NPFL title, a feat that has evaded him throughout his illustrious managerial career. On the other hand, Daniel Ogunmodede is eager to shed the label of a “nearly man” and lead Remo Stars to their maiden league triumph. Meanwhile, Finidi George and Fidelis Ilechukwu remain firmly in the mix, refusing to bow out of the title conversation just yet.

But the story doesn’t end there. Abia Warriors have emerged as dark horses, eyeing a continental spot in the absence of Enyimba, who are surprisingly struggling to keep pace this season. The Warriors’ resurgence has added yet another layer of intrigue to an already captivating campaign.

The weekend’s action was nothing short of breathtaking. Remo Stars’ impressive eight-match unbeaten run, dating back to December 8, 2023, was brought to a halt by Enugu Rangers in a thrilling encounter. Isaac Savior, Rangers’ talisman, once again proved his worth with a decisive goal, followed by Kingsley Maduforo’s strike. Sikiru Alimi’s late consolation goal for Remo Stars in the 89th minute wasn’t enough to salvage a result, but the Sky Blue Stars remain perched at the summit of the log.

Elsewhere, Shooting Stars stumbled in Owerri, falling 2-1 to their hosts, while Rivers United’s momentum took a hit after a disappointing loss to Enyimba. The People’s Elephant, despite their struggles following a disappointing CAF Confederation Cup exit, managed to grind out a 1-0 victory thanks to Imoh Obot’s 42nd-minute strike.

In Kano, the Pillars were made to sweat for their 1-0 win over a spirited Abia Warriors side. Despite the absence of star players Ahmed Musa and Abba Adam, who has been in scintillating form with five goals in four matches, Umar Mustafa’s 42nd-minute goal proved decisive, keeping Kano Pillars in the hunt.

Plateau United fans experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in Jos. The gloomy faces at the New Jos Stadium soon turned to jubilation as Emmanuel Ihezuo and Olawale Doyeni found the back of the net, securing a crucial 2-0 win over El-Kanemi Warriors. The victory eased the pressure on coach Mbwas Mangut, who had been under fire following an ultimatum from the club’s management.

Kwara United’s resurgence under Tunde Sanni continued unabated, as they climbed to 7th on the log with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bayelsa United. Bayelsa’s manager, Isah Ladan Bosso, was left ruing missed chances, but Kwara’s newfound resilience under Sanni has been nothing short of remarkable.

In Bauchi, Lobi Stars’ woes deepened as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Katsina United, further compounding their relegation fears. Nasarawa United’s struggles also persisted, as they played out a goalless draw against Ikorodu City. The result spelled the end for coach Kabiru Dogo, who was swiftly replaced by the experienced Salisu Yusuf. Whether Yusuf can turn their fortunes around remains to be seen, but time is running out.

In the relegation dogfight, Sunshine Stars dug deep to secure a vital 1-0 win over Akwa United, who are also mired in the drop zone. Meanwhile, in Benin City, Bendel Insurance put on a masterclass, thrashing 10-man Niger Tornadoes 3-0. Julius Emiloju, Uche Collins, and Kayode Oke Solomon were the heroes on the day, delivering a performance that sent a clear message to the rest of the league.

As the NPFL season hurtles towards its climax, one thing is certain: the drama, passion, and unpredictability of Nigerian football are in full swing. Every match, every goal, and every point could be the difference between glory and heartbreak. Buckle up, football fans—this is just the beginning!

One Year Without world’s best intellectual cultural speaker, Omu Anioma, Nneoha

One Year Without world’s best intellectual cultural speaker, Omu Anioma, Nneoha

By Patrick Ochei

It’s been exactly one year that we lost a rare gem, a classic Amazon, a paragon of beauty and an intellectual role model to many, Obi Martha Dunkwu (Omu Anioma). She was my mother by adoption, she was my mentor and the world’s best intellectual cultural speaker I have ever known. She left us on this day one year ago and soared higher to the glorious realm.

Can I ever forget this day and its mystic pictures that I thought was a dream? It was to me a dream, but I’m yet to wake from it. On this day, the 16th day of February, 2024, I had received a call from Dr. Afam that our mother, Obi Martha Dunkwu (Omu Anioma) had left us. I had screamed like a whirlwind. How can that be? A woman I personally took to the hospital just for stooling and vomiting? The two nights she was at the hospital, we had gisted and laughed as usual. But is that how death comes easy, especially when the person involved is a strong full of life lioness?

Till this day I still quirk when I reflect on the episode of a year ago. Our relationship was too real to have been shortened this sudden. She would say, “my relationship with Pat is like the river; it does not close nor dry”. Even though I never shared how I often cry when I suddenly reflect on the fact that I may never see her again; so many others of her children like Barr. Adaeze Ezete, Dr. Kristy Ikhani and others have often shared their experiences waking up in tears.

In my encounter with Omu Martha Dunkwu, I grew so fond of her, just as she was about me. To prove that our encounter was divine, she had a lot in her kitty to accomplish in propagating Anioma Identity and Culture until she met me. Many a journalist had passed through her but she never approved of any of them so strong until she met me. That also confirmed my ceaseless dreams of a great cultural woman I always go to write about. And this was before my venturing into community newspaper publishing.

When in 2014, I presented the Anioma Man of the Year Award to her, she said at the ceremony in her palace, “I have turned down lots of awards for lack of meaning and sincere honour, but I accepted this Anioma Man of the Year from Anioma Trust, not because it is from the media, but because I have found a young man that is behind the project sincere and passionate about joining the struggle for the propagation of Anioma Identity and Culture. I think I am fulfilled, I have discovered someone to join me in selling who we are and what we have to the world. We must show who we are to the world through our Akwa Ocha, our language, our food and our hospitality. The Akwa Ocha is our traditional attire and it has a static value that the world needs to know about and appreciate it. This is what I have been preaching over the years but with little impact. Now I have you, not just as a media personality but as an Anioma community journalist with an understanding of interpreting our vision and mission for the Project Anioma”. Those were her exact words; they had been resonating in me since that encounter.

And not too long too, the eye-on-the-future Omu Martha Dunkwu discovered my senior brother and passionate Anioma born historian, Elder Emeka Esogbue. With the two of us joining forces with the Queen Mother, we had eventually taken the propagation of Anioma to another dimension in the global stage of culture. She was indeed a darling to work with – very audacious in speech, attractive as a quintessence of beauty, an intellectual par excellence and much more.

Since Omu Anioma soared higher, I have not had anyone called and stayed on the phone with me for more than two hours. She was a great speech maker; her strength of communication was equal to none. Once she picked interest in someone, she went all out to make that person better and well upgraded. Knowing her upgraded my media and public relations practice.

Omu Anioma made me visible and known to many, locally and internationally. When I was appointed her Media Consultant, I thought the term of reference would only revolve around writing her press statements, reporting her events, handling media relations for her and may be travelling with her occasionally on some of her invitations. But it was beyond that.

I practically became Omu’s anchor man, handling all her itineraries – approving functions that she must attend and must not attend. Because, she would always ask for my opinion. Her events were exceptionally planned by both of us, and sometimes with Mr. Godfrey Osakwe. Many dignitaries went through me to book for a space for the legendary and inspirational communicator – from within Anioma, Delta State, Eastern States, Northern States, Governments of Delta and Nigeria, local and international NGOs, including researchers from various universities in UK and USA. I went with her on various business functions by NACCIMA, visits to kingdoms and universities as guest speaker. It was massive experience working with this classy cultural woman that became the rave of the moment and always a cynosure of all eyes.

What more can I say in this short piece if not to start thinking about putting a book together to share experiences of working with this Mother Without Borders in greater dimension. She was never a coward, even when death was staring at her in the face, she was busy dishing out the remaining instructions from the ones she had long given. This is because most often, she would say things, but because we were not thinking of her departure in the immediate, we ignored them. It was when she shocked us with her exit that we realized a lot of things that she had been saying.

Adieu Nneoha (Mother To All and Mother Without Borders). Keep shining where you are Nneoma! Your radiance will always glitter in the heart of most of our people in Anioma and even beyond. Your special son, Comrade Patrick Ochei loves you, always!

Comrade Patrick Ochei is a Journalist, Publisher and Child Protection Advocate.
