NUJ raises Breast cancer awareness campaign, calls for early detection, treatment
The Fresh Angle International Newspaper Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has called for increase in Breast cancer awareness campaign, saying it would create better consciousness for early detection, treatment and survival.
The Chairman of Fresh Angle International Newspaper Chapel of NUJ, Yvonne Suowari, who made the call Friday October 25, in a statement issued in Warri, said demand for intensification of the campaign, has become necessary, as a result of reduced mammography associated with cancer related challenges.
Suowari’s statement came on a heel of the declaration of October as Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Whilst stating that Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, the NUJ Chairman, noted: “1 in 8 women will develop Breast cancer in their lifetime, but early detection, significantly improves survival rates.
“Risk factors for the disease include; family history, age from 40, reduced mammography accuracy and radiation exposure.”
According to her, Mammograms, Clinical Breast Exams, CBE, Breast Self-Exams, BSE as well as MRI and Ultrasound, are some of the ways to detect Breast cancer, adding that healthy life style, screening and early detection, reduce the risk factors of Breast cancer.
