Senator Ekong Sampson has hailed the victory of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area in yesterday’s Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Cup final as victory for the entire Akwa Ibom South.

Senator Sampson, who represents Akwa Ibom South in the National Assembly, stated this when he gifted cash of 1million naira to the winning team when they came to present the trophy to him.

Senator Ekong Sampson was among dignitaries in the stands at the Uyo Township Stadium, to cheer the Ikot Abasi team to victory over Uyo, on penalty shoot-outs, after a tense full regulation time.

At half time, the Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin, flanked by two prominent sons of Ikot Abasi, Engr. Uwem Okoko, MD of HENSEK Integrated Services and Rt Hon. Uduak Odudoh, House of Reps Member for Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, met with the team to give some pep talk to boost the morale of the players.

Senator Sampson, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, pledged the sum of 1million naira to the team, if they won. Sampson redeemed the cash pledge, immediately after the match, when the team visited him to present the trophy at Watbridge Hotels, Uyo.

Senator Sampson while celebrating with the team, noted that the victory of Ikot Abasi represented victory for all of Akwa Ibom South. He hailed the spectacular showing of teams from Akwa Ibom South in the just concluded Governor’s Cup. Recall that Urue Offong/Oruko, another team from the Senatorial District, finished third at the tournament.

The Akwa Ibom South Senator praised Gov. Umo Eno for his commitment to youth development through sports, stating that the Governor’s Cup will birth football stars for the state and Nigeria.
